The WIDI Recognition System is used to convert a musical piece recorded as a WAVE file into a MIDI file, containing notes. Sophisticated algorithms are required to accomplish this difficult task. Currently, these algorithms have not been perfected, so the results are not always accurate.
WIDI works by cutting recordings into small pieces and applying frequency analysis to each piece (concatenating the pieces for bass notes). Spectrum received is multiplied on an equalizer curve and then maximums are rounded to nearest notes and written to a MIDI file. More complex schemes are currently being investigated which will allow differentiation between various musical instruments and a lower number of errors.
