Transistor Synth 404 is a virtual analogue multitimbral synthesizer that uses DirectX. It features all basic concepts of an analog synthesizer: 2 Oscillators (VCO), LFOs, a filter unit (VCF) and an ADSR section (VCA). Additional features include Oscillator Sync, Pulse Width, FM, a Ring Modulator, Distortion, and some fx (delay in V1.x). A step sequencer lets you easily edit the notes.
Although the program works in real-time, there is no MIDI control, so all parameters must be set with the mouse and keyboard. The author mentions that this might be added in a future version.
Features
- 4 generators
- 2 oscillators per generator
- freely link generators (so you can easily build 8 osc sounds!)
- 4 waveforms (saw, 303saw, square, sine) + 1 user waveform for each oscillator
- Oscillator Mix, Oscillator Sync & Phase Adjust
- Pulse Width
- Filters: 12/24dB Lowpass, 12dB Highpass and Bandpass with variable Cutoff and Resonance
- Ring Modulator
- Frequency Modulation (FM)
- LFO on Pitch, Resonance or Cutoff
- ADSR + Step gate to cut notes
- 2 distortion types for each generator
- 1 delay unit
- Step Sequencer with Shift up/down/right/left
- Random pattern generator (not purely random, sometimes it generates good stuff)
- Stream output to disk as a RAW file
NOTE: There is currently no manual, so you'll have to figure things out by playing around with the software and possibly reading The Sonic Spot's Sound Synthesis Guide.
Requirements
- Windows 95/98
- Pentium processor
- Microsoft DirectX
- 800x600 or higher display resolution
