You have arrived at a computer music and audio site in the process of being reborn.
Founded in 1999 but somewhat dormant since 2001, The Sonic Spot is in the process of being repopulated with updated content and relaunched. Independent of any manufacturer or retailer, it exists to serve the community of those making and using music and audio software of all types.
The purpose of this site from the beginning has been to provide a single place for electronic musicians and audio enthusiasts to learn about and discuss everything there is to know about music and audio on the PC. There are currently six sections used to realize this purpose. You can get to any of the sections from the menu found at the top of every page on this site.
The Software Library contains a comprehensive, well organized and accurate listing of useful electronic music and audio resources available for the PC. Each and every one has been tested by The Sonic Spot to make sure that you will get accurate descriptions and successful downloads. The descriptions provide overviews, feature lists, screen-shots, downloads and links to related information in a consistent format making it easier to compare what's available. Software that we feel stands out from the rest also gets a site review and rating. We also have user reviews enabled so your opinions can be counted.
Hardware Listings contains listings, similar to the Software Library, on hardware designed to be used in conjunction with music and audio software. Digital audio workstations, control surfaces, sound cards and other items that help make the computer music experience pleasant are covered here with overviews, feature lists, photos, and links to related information. We will provide site reviews on selected pieces, and also have user reviews enabled so we can obtain your opinions.
News contains daily news stories related to computer music and audio. Some of it reports on the arrival or new products or product updates. Other simply reports information we find fellow enthusiasts will find interesting.
The Guide to Digital Audio and Music is a constantly growing hypertext document containing information ranging from basic help for beginners to technical specifications for programmers. You can learn how sound synthesis works, the way music and audio is stored electronically and even get programming details on some of the popular file formats.
The Message Forums are for learning and discussing everything there is to know in the field of electronic music and audio. It includes software and hardware topics, studio production techniques, space for developers, and areas for just discussing what is on your mind.
Resources are being developed, including a comprehensive directory of music and audio software related sites, as well as a listing of all companies who make software or hardware described on the site.
We try to follow-up every page of content with related links to help direct you to further information located on and off of this site. Some of these links are for books that we think interested readers may find useful. Related book links are provided as a service of The Sonic Spot in association with Amazon.com.
The Sonic Spot was founded in 1999 by Mitch Bechtel, a computer programmer and computer music enthusiast. In 2001, Mitch Bechtel moved on to dedicate himself full time to the ongoing enhancement of webCOMAND, a powerful and flexible web content management system. With his partner, Mitch formed COMAND Solutions, Inc. to further grow the webCOMAND product which now manages web sites and intranets ranging from Sonic Spot to the University of California San Francisco to UBS financial services.
In 2005, the Sonic Spot was acquired by Ray Worthy Campbell, an attorney who founded online musical gear retailer zZounds.com and later served as CEO and Chairman of Harmony–Central.com until its sale to Guitar Center in the summer of 2005.
The Sonic Spot has now been moved to the powerful webCOMAND content management platform, with founder Mitch Bechtel's constant involvement and guidance, enabling faster response to the rapid developments in this field. A new team is being built, with the goal of making the Sonic Spot the premier resource on the internet for information and community related to computer music and audio. Old content is being updated, and new content is being added on a daily basis.
