Beatnik lets you experience interactive Web audio directly from Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Internet Explorer, or America Online. Beatnik creates a new low-bandwidth, high-quality audio experience for Web users, one where sonified buttons respond instantly with clicks, where navigation bars respond with audio feedback to your movements, and where tempo and instruments in an Interactive MP3 remix can be changed by your interaction with the page or the Web site. Beatnik supports many music and audio file formats, including RMF (Rich Music Format), MIDI, MOD, AIFF, WAV, MP3, and AU files.
Unlike the LiveAudio and Crescendo plug-ins, which rely on their users' soundcard, General Midi sound set or Quicktime Musical Instrument set for the sound that they play, the Beatnik Player uses its own software synthesizer, custom sounds, and the composers' custom samples to guarantee that all music sounds exactly the same across each of Beatnik's supported platforms.
